Traveling4Health (T4H) founder, Ilene Little, is committed to sorting out the "pretenders" from the "players" in the medical tourism industry.  The “Good Guy” providers want this distinction made as much as we do for the benefit of our members. 

I was forwarded an interesting article on Asia and Medical tourism.  It neatly listed the three components considered to be those of importance in the “emerging IPC” (International Patient Care) industry.  I was frustrated however, once again, to see a HUGE gap in the understanding of what components truly are necessary to help guarantee a SUCCESSFUL medical tourism (IPC) experience for the patient.

Whether you choose to make all arrangements for yourself (DIY), or book with a medical tourism company, make sure you fully understand the logistical, medical and legal considerations affecting all medical travellers.  We recommend getting all answers in writing.

How The Emergence of Medical Knowledge Led to Medical Tourism:

Throughout history medicine has been a byproduct of society’s investment in science, education and technology.  To this end, affluent nations became magnets for science-based education and innovation upon which rests the development and production of pharmaceuticals, medical technology and advanced medical treatment protocols (a/k/a: Centers of Excellence). 

Centers of Medical Excellence have attracted patients from neighboring countries, regardless of time and place in history. 

The following evolutionary summary helps understand the cyclical nature of “knowledge-migration” from one country and region to another.  It demonstrates the dynamic nature of medical knowledge and therefore should help mitigate inherent cultural biases about treatment destination.

1.  Do your homework! Research, Research, Research. Take nothing for granted. Talk with various facilitators to ascertain their subject matter expertise.

2.  Select a facilitator who has medical industry qualifications and experience.  Stay away from “medical travel agencies”.
