Lifestyle Summary

Retirement in Montezuma, Costa Rica- Retiring in Montezuma, Costa Rica- Living in Montezuma, Costa Rica- Cost of Living in Montezuma, Costa Rica

Definitely not for everyone when it comes to retirement, unless surfing is your sport and you are attracted to the huge waves and rough coastline.

There are enclaves of foreigners and expats - the tiny beach haven features a mix of local "Ticos" as well as a foreign community with a lot of European influences.

Lots of living in tents, really laid back, hard-core hippie types, street-side bars and craft shacks.

Montezuma is in North Puntarenas Province, nestled amid a striking and varied landscape, Montezuma posses a unique open-air comfort and culture.

T4H member and expat Gene Warneke reports that home owners in Montezuma have a crime problem.

This youtube video says 60's parrot-heads, former residents of Key West - or wannabe's -- would feel at home here, along with serious and very good surfers.   I certainly will want to check it out, but I admit the waves are big and scarey, probably too rough a coast for my taste.

Travel Summary

Montezuma, Costa Rica Travel – Montezuma, Costa Rica Travel Guide for Medical Tourists – Montezuma, Costa Rica Travel Tips

Gig waves, hugh waves!  World-class surfer waves.  Good topography, nice water fall.  Lots of local crafts sold by residents.

Hiking, swimming, snorkeling is also available.  The backdrop is the high rising jungle of the Montezuma Biological Reserve.  About a 15 min hike takes you to Piedra Colorado, where a river empties into the sea and an off-shore reef is great for snorkeling.
scenic El Chorro waterfall.

There are direct buses from San Jose to Montezume, about 5 hr. trip and cost you $10.  Most Costa Ricans do not have cars so public transportation is efficient and reliable.

There is a water taxi running between Montezuma and Jaco; about an hour ride and definitely worth the trip to save the time, see the scenery and get a feel the local culture.  Price one way approx. $40

Lots of affordable accommodations for travellers on a budget.
