Retirement in Mexicali, Mexico - Retiring in Mexicali - Living in Mexicali, Mexico

Mexicali is the capital of Baja California, which is also the westernmost state of Mexico.  it is not a popular retirement destination.

Mexicali is considered among the most prosperous cities in Mexico, but the city-sprawl is not attractive to retirees.  The town has the feel of a gritty border town.    It is easy to observe the level of poverty in rural villages surrounding the modern, upper-middle class enclave of Mexicali proper.

They are the "big city" for surrounding rural towns; the closest shopping mall experience.  However, even the mall appeared a bit grimy.

Mexicali is recognized in Mexico for its sizable investment in education and low unemployment. It is a progressive city with main industry that has gone from agricultural to industrial.

Visitors can expect a very hot climate during the summer months while cool throughout the rest of the year, with average temperatures during the summer daytime ranging from 125ºF (51°C) from June to September.

Health Care Summary

Health Care in Mexicali, Mexico

Very good medical facilities can be found in Mexicali, both capable of handling major trauma and cardiovascular emergencies. The smaller destinations of Ensenada and San Felipe have small clinics that provide good care but are not as capable. More serious emergencies should be referred to either Tijuana or San Diego (just over the US – Mexico border).

Because of the recent growth of US retirement communities and the close proximity to the US border, English is more widely spoken in the medical facilities making it easier to communicate.

T4H members report that If you need emergency medical treatment, it is better that you go to a private hospital; going to a public hospital or a Seguro Social hospital will be futile, as they are only for registered Mexican citizens and they themselves have problems getting medical attention there.
