Located in the Bahía de Todos Santos, Ensenada is an important commercial and fishing port as well as a cruise ship stop and the third largest city in Baja California. Ensenada is city a well known nightlife destination and also well known for the Baja 500 and 1,000 off-road races. With its warm Mediterranean climate and easy access by sea, road, and air, Ensenada is a favorite for many tourists. Ensenada sits in the heart of a wine country that is widely regarded as the best in Mexico.

Ensenada and San Felipe have small clinics that provide good care but are not capable of handling advanced emergency care. More serious emergencies should be referred to either Tijuana or San Diego (just over the US – Mexico border).

Hospital Cardiomed and Hospital Velmar works with most Mexican and some U.S. and Canadian insurance plans. Both have well trained staffs and some English is spoken.

Because of the recent growth of US retirement communities and the close proximity to the US border, English is more widely spoken in the medical facilities making it easier to communicate.

Many residents from California, Arizona and Nevada look for medical and dental services in Ensenada because they tend to be less expensive than those in the United States. In addition to dental and plastic surgery, Mexican hospitals are popular for bariatric surgery for weight loss, considered an elective procedure that is not covered by some US insurers. A popular bariatric procedure, lap band surgery, which was approved by the FDA in the US in 2001, has been performed by Mexican surgeons predating FDA approval.

Some pharmaceutical drugs are sold without prescriptions and at much lower costs than pharmacies in the US but generally, medications still require a doctor's prescription.

The most comfortable way to get to Ensenada is by cruise ship. It has been a regular stop for some time because of its deep water port. Travel by car to Ensenada from the US border via Route 1 is considered to enjoyable and scenic. You will enjoy the coastline most of the way on the well maintained toll roads and have rest stops and vista points along the way. Traveling at night is not recommended for safety reasons. Another over land route is by taking one of the ABC busses. They are well maintained and comfortable.
